Highlights from 1912 to 1915

We have made it up to the 1926 newspapers but thought you would still like to know some of the highlights happening in Lake City as we go along. Nothing is quite so interesting as some forgotten history that you discover anew once more. With that in mind, we have gathered some of the more interesting tidbits of information, historical happenings, etc., and posted them below for your amusement and edification. Please remember that the copies of the newspapers on microfilm are not in the best of shape so might have missed a thing or two.

Robert G. Fowler, a famous aviator, who has been making a transcontinental flight from Los Angeles, California to Jacksonville, was seen flying over our city in his aeroplane on Thursday afternoon between three and four o’clock. An immense crowd congregated near and along the track of the Seaboard Air Line here, to get a good look at the bird-man as he flew over. As soon as the aeroplane came into sight the fire-whistle was blown to put the people on notice. Although the ship followed the line of the Seaboard track on its flight to Jacksonville, it was plainly visible from all points in and around this city. It was a wonderful sight and one that will be long remembered.

FREE DELIVERY OF MAIL TODAY

The free delivery of mail goes into effect today in Lake City. Erle B. Allen and John H. Cone are the carriers and W.J. Roebuck is appointed substitute clerk in the post office.

The service will be especially appreciated by those living in the outskirts of the city and the inauguration of free delivery is another indication of the steady and substantial progress being made in Lake City.

FIRE TRUCK RECEIVED

The $8500 fire truck for the Lake City Fire Department recently purchased by the city has arrived and will be unloaded upon arrival of the expert demonstrator from Elmira, N.Y. factory. The truck is of 70 H.P. equipped with triple pumps for throwing three streams of water in case of need. The truck is equipped also with chemical tanks, hoses, and folding ladders. The city purchased the fire struck with the understanding that it must come up to the most rigid test both as a firefighter and its ability to pull through the heavy sanded streets. Otherwise, the city will be under no obligation.

CURRENT TOPIC CLUB HAS CHANGED NAMED TO WOMAN’S CLUB OF LAKE CITY

The Current Topic Club held its last regular meeting with Mrs. Ray Young on May 27th.

In the absence of the president, Mrs. Rivers, the newly elected president, Mrs. I.S. Jones, presided.

The business of the afternoon consisted of the amendment of the Constitution. The following important changes were made: (10) That the name and the object of the Club be changed from the Current Topic Club to the Women’s Club of Lake City; (2) That the dues be made $1.50 a club year, this includes the price of year book and mailing expenses; (3) That article 4, section 1, be amended and the following clause added, “Nominations from the floor are in order.” (4) That the final corrections in the matter of the wording of slight changes be left to the program committee.

The Club has been doing the work of a regular Woman’s Club and has been a member of the State Federation for years. For the past three years, the Federation has been urging a change in name from the Current Topic Club to the Woman’s Club of Lake City, since the name and object of the Club have long since been left behind and the work prescribed by the Federation is being done, it was deemed consistent to change the name to the Woman’s Club of Lake City since there is no other organization in the town by that name at present…

Sadly, we could not come up with any more highlights for 1915 as only 3 editions are available for the entire year.

Till next time…
