Fun and News from 1924 in Lake City

The twenties were pretty lively in Lake City, Florida as well as around the country. It may not have been in the mainstream with lots of people living in the area but it has been and continues to be a crossroads for those coming and going north to south.

HOTEL POWELL OFFICIALLY OPENS

The Powell Hotel recently completed and thrown open to the public on June 16th, is one of the best and most conveniently arranged hotel properties in the State.

The hotel is newly furnished thru-out with attractive mahogany-finished furniture with 42 rooms and 38 private baths, running water in every room, steam heated and all modern conveniences, including an electric elevator and a splendid system of fire escapes.

Mr. J.M. Powell, the proprietor of this hotel is well known to the traveling public, who are cordially invited to make the Powell Hotel their headquarters.

***J.M. Powell, was the former proprietor of the Hotel Blanche before O.K. Holmes took over. Now he has opened a hotel directly across the street from the Blanche. N.G. Wade also announces Blanche is adding new wings in the same month***

Nine Hole Golf Course for Lake City

Around fifty memberships were subscribed for the past week in the Lake View Country Club Association. The Lake View Club memberships are $100.00 twenty-five percent payable in advance.

The officers in charge will begin work at once with the preparation of golf course grounds and work will be speeded up in order to have the course ready for this season’s sport.

Contractors will soon start the work on the clubhouse buildings, finishing up at an early date all buildings and landscaping.

The golf course grounds are at the foot of South Marion Street fronting the base ballpark grounds on State Highway No 2, and a more convenient and attractive spot could not have been selected for a country club and golf course site.

Following is the list of Club officers: F.H. Young, president; A.G. Paul, Jr, Vice President’ J.B. Hodges, Secretary; R.J. Inman, Treasurer. The Board of Directors are F.H. Young, A.G. Paul, Jr, J.B. Hodges, R.J. Inman, Alex Paul, T.R. Bowen, F.C. Paul.

NEW MOTORCYCLE OFFICER

Patrolman Worth Hull has been changed from the Railroad Street district to the position of motorcycle officer. From all reports, it seems that no better man could have been secured for the position of speed cop.

Hull has been in the employ of the city as a policeman for about a year and has made an excellent record as an officer.
