Collecting Memorabilia

This past week I couldn’t help myself and started buying memorabilia of the Hotel Blanche and very old Lake City, Florida stuff. I have already purchased several years copies of the Sanborn Fire Maps for Columbia county and am saving up for the rest of them from the mid-1920s and 1940s that are now owned by EDR – Environmental Data Resources, Inc. They charge like $20 per page for these things so I was only able to get the one page with the Blanche Hotel from 1924, I think. So, I decided to try to collect less expensive items like old postcards, old letterhead, and any other physical items that might be available. I have already made the rounds of all the antique shops in town and haven’t had any luck locating anything yet. But if you know someone who would be willing to part with some notable trinkets for a few dollars or would let me come over and take pictures and share their story please let me know.

The newspaper research is coming along. I am now up to 1926 in viewing and 1954 in scanning into PDF format from the library. Sadly, I am still at around 1913 or 1914 in posting information that I have copied from the newspapers. It is a slow and tedious process to be sure but an interesting one. So far, I have come up with at least 4 different book ideas to write about Lake City/Columbia county including a couple of ideas for fiction stories too. I hope to have the Employees and Guest pages updated in a couple of days. Hopefully, at least, up to the 1920 census anyway.

I will be posting the fronts of the postcards on Instagram throughout the week. Most of them are used and still have the postage and message on the backs. Below is a couple of them that I got on eBay. If anyone knows the people listed please let is know so we can share your story. Of course, if you can translate them and give us a year for each that would be really cool too. Please post in the comments below.
